Dr. Rami Makhoul serves as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Holy Cross Hospital, is the cancer liaison physician for Holy Cross Cancer Center, and a clinical instructor at the George Washington University. Named one of Washingtonian’s best doctors by The Washingtonian Magazine, Dr. Makhoul completed a residency in general surgery at George Washington University Hospital in Washington D.C. He then pursued a Colon and Rectal Surgery fellowship at the prestigious Robert-Wood Johnson University Hospital-Rutgers University in New Jersey. During his training he had the opportunity to lead several clinical research projects and publish his work that is focused on colon and rectal cancers, and the use of Robotic Surgery in various abdominal procedures. Dr Makhoul has been honorably serving the Washington D.C Metro area since 2014.
Dr Makhoul is board certified in general surgery and Colon and Rectal Surgery. Dr Makhoul is an active member of many professional societies, including American College of Surgery, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and several other local chapters. He is on the editorial board of several journals and has been recognized for his dedication to surgical education with several teaching and mentorship awards throughout his career.
Dr Makhoul diagnoses and treats various diseases of the colon, rectum, anus, and other parts of the gastrointestinal tract using national standards and guidelines. His clinical interest is treating colon and rectal cancer using advanced surgical minimally invasive techniques including robotic, laparoscopic, and transanal minimally invasive surgery.
When he is away from the office, Dr Makhoul may be found spending time with his family. Dr Makhoul enjoys skiing, cycling, scuba diving, tennis, and traveling.
Dr Makhoul is fluent in three languages: English, French, and Arabic.
