Here at Metro Colon and Rectal Surgery PC, we know our patients prefer a minimally invasive approach to surgical procedures whenever possible. That is why we are proud to offer transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization, or THD, as a surgical means of treating large internal hemorrhoids. Instead of removing the hemorrhoid and the tissues surrounding it, THD procedure simply ties off the arterial blood supply to the vein and sutures it back into place. There are no incisions, and the entire procedure is performed using a Doppler and scope inserted through the anus.

How long will I be in the hospital if I have THD surgery ?

Transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization is typically an outpatient procedure. The entire operation usually takes less than a half hour, and most patients are discharged from the hospital to go home the same day. The immediate recovery period requires only a few days, although it can take several months for the treatment area to fully heal and return to normal.

Will I experience pain after THD surgery?

Most patients experience very little discomfort after a transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization. There is no tissue removed during the procedure, and the entire operation is performed above the dentate line. Both of these factors lead to far less discomfort for most patients than with traditional hemorrhoidectomy.

How long do I have to wait before returning to work?

People who undergo THD for hemorrhoids generally feel well enough to return to work within 3 or 4 days of the procedure. It is important to continue eating a high-fiber diet and drinking plenty of water every day in the weeks and months that follow the procedure.
